It’s
one thing to thrive on stress, it’s another
thing when the stress gets so bad your people
can’t function properly. The critical difference
between positive and negative stress lies in perception:
how someone deals with potentially stressful situations.
Simple effective coping strategies are shared,
for better overall stress management.
For some people, twenty-four hours are just not
enough to squeeze everything in to one day: work,
sleep, errands, time with family. In fact, trying
to squeeze everything in while attempting to balance
work demands and home responsibilities is a leading
cause of stress for most people. In turn, excessive
stress is a key risk factor for heart attack and
other serious health problems.
A study by the American Institute of Stress estimated
that U.S. companies spend $300 billion annual
in lost time, extra costs in health and workers'
compensation insurance costs, and the cost of
replacing employees who leave for stress-related
reasons.
$300 billion is a lot of money. But that’s
not all. We aren’t talking about money spent
on machinery or office furniture—there are
people involved here. Human beings, with other
human beings who are impacted by the state of
their well being.
There are different kinds of stress, some positive
and some negative. The positive kind can contribute
to an organisation’s quality and results.
The negative kind, however, can disrupt operations
from all angles. Minimising negative stress in
the workplace offers both qualitative and quantitative
benefits to an enterprise.
In this keynote, Anne McKevitt will talk about
the ways that stress appears in work environments,
what kind of impacts it has, and ways to manage
it effectively. Topics include:
